We analyze these publications in regard to their intended use case, technical methodology for registration and tracking, data sources, visualization as well as validation and evaluation. We identified 171 relevant publications through a systematic search of the PubMed and Scopus databases. In this systematic review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the usage of the first-generation HoloLens within the medical domain, from its release in March 2016, until the year of 2021, were attention is shifting towards it's successor, the HoloLens 2. In medical settings, the HoloLens enables the physician to obtain immediate insight into patient information, directly overlaid with their view of the clinical scenario, the medical student to gain a better understanding of complex anatomies or procedures, and even the patient to execute therapeutic tasks with improved, immersive guidance. The HoloLens (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA), a head-worn, optically see-through augmented reality display, is the main player in the recent boost in medical augmented reality research. Building on these observations, we illustrate a diverse set of "visualization superpowers" and highlight opportunities for the visualization community to create new systems and interactions that empower new experiences with data. The second identifies seven ways in which visualization tools and interfaces can instill a sense of empowerment in the people who use them. We introduce two frameworks: The first characterizes seven underlying mechanisms that form the basis for a variety of visual superpowers portrayed in fiction. We investigate the intersection of these domains, and show how the language of superpowers can be used to characterize existing visualization systems and suggest opportunities for new and empowering ones. Researchers and practitioners often tout visualizations' ability to "make the invisible visible" and to "enhance cognitive abilities." Meanwhile superhero comics and other modern fiction often depict characters with similarly fantastic abilities that allow them to see and interpret the world in ways that transcend traditional human perception. We explore how the lens of fictional superpowers can help characterize how visualizations empower people and provide inspiration for new visualization systems. Drawing upon these analyses, we offer suggestions for future research on this tantalizing capability.

We summarize studies reported in the literature. Because augmented reality systems are user-centered, it is important to evaluate how well these visualization metaphors enable users to perform tasks that benefit from X-ray vision. In response to these challenges, several visualization metaphors have been proposed we survey these in light of the perceptual background.

We review the perceptual background to understand how the visual system infers depth and how these assumptions are or are not met by augmented reality displays. The most obvious challenge is to the human visual system, which is being asked to interpret a very unnatural perceptual metaphor. This “X-ray vision” feature has intrigued and challenged AR system designers for many years, with only modest progress in demonstrating a useful and usable capability. This is especially true in mobile applications for urban environments, in which navigation and other operations are hindered by the urban infrastructure. The ability to visualize occluded objects or people offers tremendous potential to users of augmented reality (AR).
